So what is Permaculture?
Permaculture simply means gardening or farming in a way that is harmonious with the natural habitat. That means, planting seeds that will grow naturally and well in their given climate, grouping plants that support one another and the health of the soil, and rotating crops to support the soil regeneration for future, strong plant growth. Even understanding how to choose plants that encourage our bees and naturally ward off nasty pests is part of this sustainable farming method.
Having a commitment to permaculture methodologies helps our earth produce the nutritious, delicious vegetables our bodies crave and need.
Supporting Local, Small Market Farmers helps us all
Reduction of our Carbon Footprint – We all hear of ‘Global Warming’ but what does produce have to do with it? Well, quite a bit it turns out. When we purchase locally grown produce, we cut out the shipping, driving and fuel it takes to transport vegetables from where they’re grown. Many of the fruits and vegetables we see in the grocery stores are actually imported from other countries.
Lower Cost in the market – Eating from around the globe has become ‘the norm’ for most. If, however, we begin to shift our choices to what is grown locally, and is in season, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but we can save money too! The cost of shipping, fuel and storage is all factored into your retail cost.
Faster from harvest to your table – Tastier, fresher, nutritious rich produce picked within hours or days vs. weeks. Nothing tastes better than farm fresh. When commercially grown produce is picked for shipping, it generally gets harvested while underripe so it holds up during transit and storage time. Eat a vine ripened tomato and you’ll see exactly what we mean!
